Broken Key Loop

One of my MK5 keysfobs snapped off the little key ring on the top, which is where it connects to the keyfob. It's made of plastic or soft metal. I've made a hole in it, and then wet-sanded the area to make it stronger however, I'm assuming the problem isn't resolved by this.

I've also wrapped the broken portion of the ring in clear tape, but that does not seem to do any good. It's a shame because I use the tiny split rings to keep my keys in place.
